Dogs like Dalton, pictured above with his handler Liz Naber can be trained to detect human remains under the water. The canine handler works with the boat coxswain to guide the canines nose in a search pattern across the water. Once the canine picks up the scent of human remains percolating from beneath the water, the handler reads the dogs behavior and body language to instruct the coxswain to get the boat as close to the source of the scent as possible. The handler has to take into affect any current or wind when setting up the initial search strategy for their canine. This is one of the hardest disciplines to certify a canine in.
